Gethsemane means “the place of the press,” where olives would be crushed to produce oil.  Oil of course is emblematic of the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures.  In a striking picture, Jesus now arrives at this celebrated garden, where He will experience the greatest pressing of His life; the agony so intense as to cause our Savior to sweat blood and fall flat on His face to the point of death.   What caused Christ such extreme distress, was not the betrayal or the rejection or the horrific physical abuse coming forth  –  but rather the incalculable separation from His Father for our sin.  And so Jesus heads into the press, and what is ultimately produced in this crushing, is the oil of the Holy Spirit being poured out upon His children.  Where the first Adam fell in one garden, Jesus now stands victorious in another.  Get your Word on with us, where we peer into the immeasurable mystery of Christ at Gethsemane, in one of the most profound texts in all the Bible  –  and one of the most beautiful pictures of His great love for us.
