Jesus begins His ministry by submitting Himself to be baptized by John, even though there is nothing for Him to repent from, in order to identify with sinful humanity. In a fantastic passage, the heavens are opened, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father pronounces “This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased.” At this point in time, Jesus had not preached a sermon, He had not healed a soul, He had not performed even one miracle – and yet He had won the Father’s approval. This carpenter was standing in sawdust for 18 years there in Nazareth submitting to Joe and Mary, completely content to be faithful in the everyday ordinariness of life. Well evidently the Father looked at that and thought that was pretty impressive. “This is my Son, in who I am well pleased.” Get your Word on with us, where the light never goes out.
