We’ve got lion tamers and snake charmers and horse whisperers, but James tells us in Chapter 3 that apart from the Lord we cannot tame the tongue. When our identities are tied up in things other than Christ, we set ourselves up to defend those false identities, and in doing so hurt others. What compels the contempt coming out of our mouths is a misplaced identity in things that can be taken from us, rather than our identity being rooted in the one thing that cannot.
